2004 BMW R 1100 S review from United States of America

"Overpriced bike without performance, but has an unmistakably unique look"

What things have gone wrong with the motorcycle?

None so far.

General comments?

Very heavy motorcycle without power. Not even close to most Japanese 600cc bikes when it comes to pure performance.

Brakes are OK, but the ABS requires some getting used to.

Gear shift isn't up to Japanese bikes.

OEM muffler too quiet and heavy. I replaced it with Laser full exhaust for a much better sound with less weight.

Gas tank way too small with only 120 to 140 mile range.

Riding position is bit awkward... bar is too far for me.

Suspension is very weak. Ohlin shocks should improve the ride a lot, but it is too expensive.

Maintenance cost is obnoxiously high. It is true that dealers provide good service, but $700 to 800 every 6000 miles (it is much higher for 12000 mile) is way too much.

Paint is very strong and doesn't get scratched easily.
