1995 BMW R 1100 RT review from United Kingdom

"Good tourer, but underrated (sadly)"

What things have gone wrong with the motorcycle?

Speedo cable broke when the bike was 3 years old, a common problem; the main dealer removed one from a sales bike to help me out - very impressed. 10225 miles, May 1998.

N/S of the engine began banging and engine vibrating - caused by a faulty O/S camshaft housing out of warranty, not cheap to fix! 16495 miles, August 1998.

New battery. 41623 miles, May 2001.

Final drive bearings breaking up, no play at the rear wheel however!; new bearings fitted. 47815 miles, September 2001.

Engine refused to start, found to be a faulty side stand switch. 62092 miles, June 2003.

Speedo cable broke, 79480 miles, October 2004.

General comments?

Tyres last about 7-8,000 miles on the front; rears about 10,000 miles.

Only had 3 sets of brake pads fitted in 81,000 miles; bike now 9 years old.

One battery and 2 speedo cables.

Bike very reliable and returns 56 mpg touring, down to about 50 round town.

Very good handling due to different type of front suspension to a conventional bike.

Wheel changes are very easy due to good design and no chain to remove.
