1989 BMW R 100 GS P/D review from South Africa

"Has allowed me to explore some wonderful places"

What things have gone wrong with the motorcycle?

Not much. Electrical wiring is a little suspect.

Speedometer failed at 100 000km.

Seat cover and foam has been replaced.

General comments?

On tarmac it obviously can't keep up with later GS models. The large (30+ litre) tank gives good touring range.

When tracks get rougher, the 21" front wheel and low gearing comes into its own. Although it's quite heavy (especially with a full tank!), it's surprisingly capable off road thanks to its great balance and low centre of gravity. Doesn't like mud or jumps.
