"Nice ride if you don't have the "need for speed""

What things have gone wrong with the motorcycle?

I've had no mechanical problems at all.

Be wary of a potential starter kick-back problem that can be expensive (+$600) for mid-2004 models and earlier. You MUST start as recommended to avoid this. Basically, just continue to hold the starter button on for two full seconds after engine has started.

Could use a 6th gear or a higher ratio 5th for the freeway.

General comments?

I wanted an air-cooled V-twin cruiser, but didn't want to shell out the bucks for a Harley Heritage. Bought it almost new, and it came with a comfy Mustang seat and a bunch of chrome extras at a great price. After 3 years I still enjoy it, and have had no problems at all.

Solid and proven mechanically and not a big deal to change the oil & filter, maybe an extra 15 min to drop the front exhaust. Did my own valve adjustment too.

Performance wise I think it has the least acceleration per cc of anything on two wheels, but I didn't buy it for speed (I'm older now). Strong brakes with dual disks on the front.

Paint quality is excellent, and the chrome is average.

I bought my 04 V Star new. I love the paint: Cranberry/Gold, it caught my eye right away. Very affordable; 9 grand vs 18 for a Harley Heritage.

The stock seat was not the best in comfort.

It's great on gas. I get 45-50 depending if it has ethanol or not.

The part I didn't know was you have to take off the exhaust pipes to change the oil filter. The dealer never told me either, and they offer a relocation kit for about $250. The factory should do that in my opinion.

It's a cold starting bike, EFI would help, but I added aftermarket pipes.. Cobras, and love the new loud sound.

For the price it's a great bike. Just wish they had softer seats and easier oil filter access... it does need a 6th gear!

Agree with the other posters. I have 03 V Star 1100 Custom and it is weak on acceleration. I had a Kaw 454 LTD that had more acceleration. Does need an overdrive 6th gear.

The air cooled engine puts off a lot of heat.

Great bike for commuting to work with good gas mileage.

Looks nice. Mine is black with some deep purple.
