Carburators were out of sync.
These bikes are very impressive for the age and year. Very rare as well
My Maxim X makes good power (even when riding two up), and is surprisingly comfortable on longer trips.
The bike is quick in the lower gears, and insanely faster when the tach starts going past 7000rpms!
A well taken care of or redone Maxim X will not disappoint anyone, even if you are used to bigger and faster bikes like I am.
I'd say it keeps up well with the current line of 600cc (except in areas of top speed) sportbikes, and out performs most of the "new" cruisers with double its dispacement.
I'll be hard pressed to sell my X any time soon!
I would say that your Maxim X will more than keep up with the current line of 600s.
Remember, when new it kept up with the 1 liter bikes of its day.
Yes, you are right about it keeping up with the liter bikes of yesterday, but today the liter bikes of yesterday are in the same performance arena as the newest 600-675cc of today.
The "newer" 600cc sport bikes make over 100 hp and are doing the quarter mile in the low 11's and high 10's.
My girlfriend bought a 1986 Maxim X last year. Nice looking bike, very fast. Have had lots of problems with it. Spends way more time in the shop than on the road. Paid $2600 for it and have spent $1900 in repairs. She got tired of fixing it all the time and bought a 2005 Suzuki S50. This one actually runs!
I just recently started riding a 1986 Yamaha xj700x. WOW! Its power and handling were very impressive, but when you wreck it's hard to find parts. I've owned it for only a couple of months, but I'm hooked.
You're not supposed to wreck it! If you can't keep it up, maybe you should stick to four wheels.
I purchased an '86 Maxim 5-valve with just over 8k miles on it. I cleaned out the carbs and now it runs like a top. It's a very quick, smooth running cruiser for how old it is!
I used to own a 86 and to this day I regret selling it. It had awesome power and looked great. I wish I could find another one.
I just got my Maxim X, and the brake lights work, but the tail light doesn't come on, and I can't find the fuse for the tail lights.
