2013 BRP Can-Am Spyder RT-S SE5

Summary:

Fun, but has design problems

Faults:

Ball joints replaced before purchase.

Stabilizer bar replaced. Failed testing.

Shocks replaced; too little damping in them.

Recall because of heat issues melting twin brake cylinders, causing fires.

Issue with abnormal pulling to the right.

General Comments:

My biggest complaint is the gas mileage for a touring bike is not good. 27 to 30 miles per gallon. You have to start looking for gas at about 120 miles to make sure you don't run out.

Heat is a big issue around the feet, right foot mainly because of where the hot engine air is directed out.

Once you've learned to ride on a 3 wheeler, it is a lot of fun. It's quick on acceleration and corners nice.

They could have put little more thought into the dash design, with a cigarette lighter and place to plug in Aux. sound and headphones.

I had nothing but good luck with my Spyder. It is a 2011 RS-S. It out-handles most bikes and out runs most in a short distance.

My only beef with it is poor gas mileage. Best I have ever gotten is 35 MPG. When I run it over 100 mph I am lucky to get 25 MPG. It is supposed to be governed at 110, but I held it long enough and had it at 120mph.

But it does not like cross-winds much. It has a tendency to buffet you around a bit. The way I fix it is to just go faster and let my spoilers work to stabilize it out.

Yes, I love it and would buy another.

I put most accessories on it like air management system, air-dam, bar risers, and floor-boards.

I really like my exhaust (Two Brothers Racing); it is very loud and adds lots of power, but is very expensive though.

Bought a 2013 RTS SE-5 in Birmingham, Al. in May.

Had the following problems:

1. Design flaw = two heat exhaust ports on the right side. Remedy = recall - plug the two holes and drill 2-3 two inch holes underneath. A simple fix on 2013 and earlier models.

2. Additional heat shields are needed on the exhaust system.

3. There's no way to adjust the handlebars.

4. This kind of money and there are no (factory installed) drink holders.

5. Prices for optional factory parts such as trailer hitch are outrageous.

6. Vibration and disc brake squeal; dealer could not remedy the vibration deal and said the factory was aware of the disc brake problem since '08! The easy fix on this problem - if the brake supplier can't fix the problem, get a new supplier!

7. What I was charged for my first service: over $400. THE "P.M." SERVICE ON A BIG TRUCK (KENWORTH - PETER BUILT ETC) IS LESS THAN $300. Dealers want good customers and repeat business - this doesn't fly.

Now to the good stuff. Two wheels aren't safe for me anymore (not since 1981). The Spyder RT-S with the automatic works for me and it's safer than the conventional trike. Still getting used to the "electrics". Wish I had more time.

Would I recommend the salesman = yes. The dealer= no.

The trike = YES - ABSOLUTELY.
