1996 Honda XR400R from Australia

Summary:

Most reliable bike around, powerful, all around brilliant

Faults:

The odd little thing. Nothing that it caused. Just by me hitting a tree or dropping it. Normal little thing. It's an XR400R, these things never die.

I reckon you could ride it into a tree flatout and it would still start. Although I'm not game to try.

General Comments:

Still one of the most popular trail bikes around. Has a lot of guts, although in the bush with standard gearing, you really have to ride it. I shortened the gearing. It is a must if you are using it in the bush mainly.

XR400Rs never die. The bike is 11 years old and starts every single time. All you have to do is change the oil, oil filter, and clean the air filter. These bikes are amazing.

They don't have the poke of a CRF450 or anything. But I can tell you that it's one of the most reliable dirtbikes ever. Sometimes if you stall it in the bush and it's hot, you will have to wait 5 minutes or so to start it again, but that's it.

They have good acceleration and good top speed. With stock gearing you can hit over 100kph through the bush if your balls are big enough. They're not a slow bike, but I think they are the most reliable dirtbike ever made. They have enough power to do anything except dune riding really.

Good all round bike.

I give it 10/10 and wouldn't flinch to buy another one. Although they say the Suzuki DR is just as good, and it's newer with more power, so I may look into one of them sometime.

1997 Honda XR400R from United States of America

Summary:

Awesome, low maintenance multi purpose bike!

Faults:

I regularly change the oil and filter, lube the chain, etc.

Has needed nothing in the time that I have owned it.

General Comments:

I bought this bike used with a 440 bore-out kit.

I use this bike on and off road.

It has insane power.

This bike is extremely reliable and gets great gas mileage. I get up to 55mpg on the road.

The bike is a beast off-road, and goes through anything.

Can be hard to kick-start due to the bore-out.

1997 Honda XR400R from Canada

Faults:

I have had my XR400 for 8 years with only regular maintenance.

I put a new piston in at 8,000 km's, because it was burning oil. Other than this major repair, this bike has been very reliable.

General Comments:

I race vet Expert Enduro's and Hare Scrambles, and also ride Trail Rides. I'm in a Off Road Club and we put on an Enduro, Trail Ride and Hare Scramble each year, and that is the hardest riding any bike can get, with all the stopping and starting, to put up and take down arrows.

This summer, I will put in new clutch plates. They are much needed, but with over 14,000kms on the original, I know it's time.

This bike is very comfortable to ride and race. It is on the heavy side, but it handles best with good tires on.

1996 Honda XR400R from Australia

Summary:

Great bike, a bit scary at first, but even very good for the novice rider, user friendly power

Faults:

Just the odd little thing here and there, fixable stuff... but that's a dirtbike.

General Comments:

A very good bike has plenty of punch, could do with a tad more pickup, great all round trail bike, I highly recommend them. Bulletproof.

Acceleration = Quick.

Pickup In 2nd gear or higher could do with a bit more snap.

Braking is good not great, but good.

Very comfy for a trail bike, nice big fat seat!

Suspension can be a tad too harsh.

Overall I recommend them if you want to trail ride over any other bike.
