2008 Yamaha FZ1 from Canada

Summary:

This bike is a jack of all trades, master of none, but will never disappoint you

Faults:

Fell over into the gas pump while dismounting, because I did not make sure the side stand was down, as the spring had pulled it back up. The side stand is small, and is at times difficult to find until you become used to it. I always check it now before dismounting.

General Comments:

Fit and finish, looks, and overall appearance give the impression that this is a machine with bolts and nuts, not a toy wrapped in plastic parts.

My father once said, keep the wind at your back, and with this bike my response is simply that, I AM the wind.

It is an older man's sports bike, in that it pulls, yet you are not going to need corrective surgery on your back and wrists.

The bars are very responsive, and the bike handles much like something much smaller.

Probably one of the more versatile bikes you can buy, and the lower price than that of full on sport bikes gives it more appeal to those on a budget.

I have an aftermarket gel seat, and this has aided in increasing the touring range due to discomfort experienced on the stock seat after 200 kms or so.

The motor is smooth, and the power is there, no matter where the needle in the tach is pointed, quite linear in its delivery.

Acceleration is there, just merging onto a highway from a ramp I have often found myself at foolhardy speeds without realizing just how fast I was going. So I don't recommend this bike to a first time or novice rider.

Summary:

Excellent for the sport-tourer who wants the emphasis on the sport side

Faults:

The rear wheel has some blemishes in the powder coating around the hub. It's strictly cosmetic. However, Yamaha will replace the wheel.

General Comments:

What I Like:

- Precise handling: confidence inspiring in the twisties.

- Aggressive ergonomics, for a standard bike, yet all day comfort.

- Exhilarating acceleration starting as low as 4000 RPM rpm and smoothly building to redline.

- Excellent quality.

- Large rear tire. Excellent stock rubber; i.e. Michelin Pilots.

- Stiff frame with engine as stress member.

- Brakes are impressive and have good feel; two to three finger.

- Half fairing does a good job yet still allows wind to circulate in the cockpit.

What I don't like:

- Seat not comfortable after some hours. Will look into aftermarket options.

- Foot pegs are a bit high. Aftermarket has lower kit for pegs.

Summary:

A fine ride

Faults:

No problems.

General Comments:

Light weight and quick handling at slow and highway speeds.

Pulls strong thru out all gears and stops on a dime, good brakes.

Seat could use some improvement, but I can empty a tank and still feel my rear end.

Riding position is good, but takes getting used to the foot peg layout.

The paint and overall quality is very good.

Hard ride to beat for the price.

The engine is silky smooth.

I love it.

Summary:

Fine cruiser

Faults:

Blower never came on when the bike was overheating at slow speeds, and stopped at traffic lights; never got an over heat light. Had it at the dealer several times and the problem was never corrected. They would not troubleshoot the problem, their answer was leave it with them and they would occasionally ride it to see if they could duplicate the problem. Well I solved the problem for them, I bought a new FZ1 and I love it. Amazing how often the blower kicks on in July and has never came close to overheating.

I'm heading for Durango Co. second week in Sept. and I know the trip will be wonderful on the FZ1. Love it.

General Comments:

Good looks, low seat height and easy to ride, no problems except for over heating that was a major problem and very disappointed with the dealer.
