1982 Honda CM450 Custom from United States of America

Summary:

Cheap, fun, and a great beginner

Faults:

Just the seat tearing at the seams from riding too hard.

General Comments:

It was a pretty nice ride: comfortable and practical.

I dropped the front sprocket 2 teeth, and it wheelies all over the place now.

1982 Honda CM450 Custom from United States of America

Summary:

First choice for beginners and commuters

Faults:

Periodically the chain would get loose. All I had to do was loosen the rear wheel, pull it back and the chain would tighten up again. No big deal.

General Comments:

Orlando, FL:

Great Bike. Fun for around town and commuting. More than 30-40 minutes was tough, highways were off-limits for me. I loved this bike out of town... out in the country so to speak.

1982 Honda CM450 Custom from United States of America

Summary:

Nice and smooth - rides like a 750, beats the old 450GS by far

Faults:

Haven't had a issue yet, and it sat for many years.

Flushed the gas out of the tank, and put in the new stuff, and added a carburator cleaning solution. Seems to idle just fine. A little hard to kick over - takes a fews kicks, but then runs fine. Warms up quick too.

General Comments:

Picked up this bike for about a grand $, its in perfect shape except for a dent on the tank and a scrape on the engine case.

Haven't got a chance to ride it much, but love the automatic (yes, this is the Honda matic 1982 CM450a version 2 shifts and no clutch involved). It is a big plus to have an automatic in traffic, and while waiting for the light to change green at a stop light on a hill, it saves your left hand pain as you're trying to let loose without rolling back..

It's quick off the line too. I think this could beat my 750 the first 100 feet, because there's no shift lag in between shifts of course, but after that it would lose for sure. It has a small windshield that keeps the truck blast down a lot, when passing them on the highways.

Can't wait too ride in some more on the mountain roads of Utah.

From my home in Cedar City, Utah.

1983 Honda CM450 Custom from Canada

Summary:

Perfect first-bike, or city commuter!

Faults:

Throttle cable snapped.

Right rear turn signal stopped working.

General Comments:

Great handler.

Decent on gas.

Good around town with a passenger (not so much on highway, though...)

Decent on the highway by yourself, except I would suggest you have sufficient upper-arm strength to combat those problematic wind gusts!

I'm 6'3", 200lbs, and I still find this little bike to perform quite well for me! Acceleration is good (beats every car off the line) but drops off at around 80km/h...top speed (for me anyway) is about 120km/h (and that was before I cleaned the carbs... could be faster now!).

With my height, I look somewhat disproportionate on the bike, so to correct this I have replaced the rather large, swooped-back handlebars with flat drag bars (makes us tall folks look a bit more comfortable and reduces wind drag).

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

My 1983 Honda 450c (stock) has a top speed of 150kmh, just thought you would like to know.

I weight about 160lbs and can hit about 140km/h, but bike is struggling and MPG drops to 40mpg. Bike seems happiest cruising around a 100km/h. And when cruising at between 62mph - 65mph, I get +62 miles per gallon on highway. So far I've put three thousand miles on my CM450E, and I love the gas savings.

My CM450 gets 62mpg at 62mph also; got to love that.

1982 Honda CM450 Custom from United States of America

Summary:

Fun around town bike / or commuter bike

Faults:

On the 1982 Honda "CM450 Custom", the headlight would go funky sometimes and I would have to slap it to get it to go on again. That is the only problem I ever had with it. Great Bike!

General Comments:

Good around town Bike. I felt very uncomfortable on the local inter-state highway... even for just a few miles. Could not take the blasts of wind from truckers etc... they blow you over.

I agree, very good bike. I own one myself and have taken it out on the interstate. It handles very well and I never felt uncomfortable at any moment. I wish I could get my hands on another one. LOVE that bike!
