1996 Yamaha XV1100 Virago from United States of America

Summary:

Great styled, dependable bike

Faults:

I had issues with the emergency flashers/turn signals. It was weird. If I had the emergency flashers turned all the way to the off position, I couldn't use the turn signals. Not a big deal though as I just moved it a little bit from the off position, and all was well.

Other than that, the bike was quite dependable.

General Comments:

I really love the style of this motorcycle. I was in the market for anything 900cc or larger, and this motorcycle came up for sale in the middle of winter during a snow storm, so I got a good deal on it.

The first thing I noticed, and keep in mind, I am 6'2" at 240lbs, so a fairly tall, husky dude, was the seat felt like it was pushing me into the tank. It seemed that, no matter how I positioned myself, I couldn't get comfortable. So, I upgraded to a Mustang seat. It gave me added comfort and a better seating position. Also, my bike came with forward controls. I don't even know how I would have felt with the original since I wished the forward controls were a bit more forward. I also had a Memphis Shades windshield and River Road saddlebags/windshield bag.

I used to ride 4-5 hours at a time on this bike, but as I've widened and gotten older, I just couldn't get comfortable on this bike for more than 30-minutes, so I had to sell her. It was a very sad day, but someone else, more properly sized for this bike, is loving it as much as I did. I ended up trading for a 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Classic LT.

Summary:

Nice, old school, reliable bike

Faults:

I have aftermarket exhaust pipes and they are very long. The bike sometimes backfires while idling. I have placed Seafoam in the gas tank and it seems to treat the problem. I plan on getting some OEM pipes and making sure the carbs are cleaned and synced.

General Comments:

I bought this bike because I like tinkering with different types of bikes. The V-Twin motorcycle is something I had not tried, so when I saw this bike for sale and read the reviews on it, I decided to purchase it. I bought it for less than $1700 and that was definitely in my price range.

When I purchased the bike and test rode it, I loved the sound. It was loud and you know someone is coming up the road... ME! The bike handles great. I have to adjust my shifter to protrude outward because shifting was a problem at first. It's a classic and I will hold onto this bike for at least two years.

1996 Yamaha XV1100 Virago from Canada

Summary:

Up to its end, it was my favourite motorcycle

Faults:

The odometer/speedometer unit (at the front wheel) failed - during a trip. This was a problem as I use the trip odometer to gauge gasoline levels in the tank.

The right side cover (plastic body part) left the motorcycle at highway speed and did not live to tell about it. I drilled holes and used zip ties to secure the replacement units on the bike.

To change the oil filter required a lot of work because of the engine guard - a bad design flaw.

General Comments:

It was a good touring machine, except for the small gas tanks, which limited range to about 200 km between fill-ups. This required continuous planning of gas stations and stops.

I used to say that its colour was chrome with blue highlights.

The motorcycle was written off in a crash.

Although I loved it, I doubt I'll ever own another 'cruiser' bike, as dual purpose machines and naked bikes handle better, and work very well on longer trips.
