2011 BRP Can-Am Spyder RT

Summary:

A totally new riding experience for all ages

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong to date.

General Comments:

The roadster has changed my thinking of what cycling is about. This design has allowed us in our 70s to continue cycling. And it's ridden through spring to fall, and into the winter season.

As a former two wheeler, it does ride differently than a cycle. But just remember to handle this roadster like it's a snow mobile that corners like a go-cart, and you'll get the handle on it quick. I find I still have my cycle habit in my head, and drift into the left or right side of the drive lane. In the old days, the middle was always black with oil, and dead man's land on hot or rainy days. You ride this one like a trike, and park it like a car.

Ride and comfort are great for touring, but a little weak on MPG. It's quick off the line and very quiet. The ROTAX two cylinder engine is just flawless. Redlined at 9000 is just out of sight.

2011 BRP Can-Am Spyder RT

Summary:

Great

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

It amazes me that people keep trying to compare this machine to a two wheel cycle - it's a tricycle. You may as well compare a standard motorcycle to a dump truck, and have the same validity.

This thing is well built (as good as the Honda's I have owned, much better than the Suzukis and Harley I owned). It retains all the good points of the motorcycle, but adds many of the good points of an ATV or even a snowmobile. It's quiet at highway speed and comfortable (great for long distances) and carries more inside cargo than any ATV, snowmobile or motorcycle I've owned.

Gas mileage could be improved, but I like to stretch every couple of hours anyhow. It's not the machine for the real image conscientious guy who puts on 1500 miles a year, and that's circling the Dairy Queen tying to impress the 13 year old girls. The RT is made to go and it does. I am already planning some 8,000 mile trips across the US and back.

I would like some more HP, but it is adequate now. Not sure I like the propriety tire system they have. I'm sure other tire companies will make more when the volume increases. I'm also concerned about the availability of dealerships. I wonder how many there in southern NM or AZ (same problem with BMW I guess).

Ride it every day. I'm 64, never owned anything I have enjoyed as much. Still get mobbed every time I stop. Folks want to know all about it. Feel like I am selling them.

To the person with the heat problem on right foot: It is called a Radiator Block Off Plate. You can find it aftermarket parts; just about everyone has one. It runs between $20.00 to $30.00; that includes tax and shipping, but works great. Have to remove the pan under the radiator for the head to go somewhere else. I have a 2011 Can-Am Spyder RT.
